Perfect Moment Monday -- JUMP

My oldest son participated in an Air Band contest last week. He and his 5-member band performed the song, "JUMP." Mine was the lead singer.

Earlier in the week we had purchased the materials to make his microphone and create his costume. I could tell other parents had spent several hours on making drums, painting the keyboard, buying a wig and creating a cardboard guitar.

As I watched the "warm-up" bands, I realized how important this performance was in the life of a 7th grader.

They announced Van Halen as the five boys took the stage. I felt tears in my eyes watching mine perfectly lip sync the words, "Might as well JUMP"...and all of the boys would jump up in the air and twist around as the crowd screamed and clapped (the groupies).

My tears were out of pride. They were out of memories of winning a lip sync contest (as Dolly Parton -- complete with big ones) when I was in college, and because these kind of events remind me of how cool it is to raise teenagers. This is certainly the frosting of the parenting cake.

I loved this post, not just for the sheer emotion related to your child, but for the perspective that raising teens can be rewarding! Great moment.

GAH! I wish I'd been there! I'm sure he inherited some of the famous hamminess of our family.

Now I'll have this song in my head the rest of the day.

Wonderful! I'm not even going to ponder the fact that I LOVED that song when I was in 7th grade...and now your son is lip-syncing to it as an "oldie".

It's so great to see teens having fun and being kids. What a great event to participate in. I taught 7-9 grade and they are challenging years but it was so much fun to watch them grow from Sept-June.

I love that they did Van Halen! That's so our generation, but them, instead!

Sheri, how wonderful to hear something positive about raising a teenager. I'm getting close.
I could just see them doing that song. Had to be a lot of fun.
It reminded of Saturday when my son caught a pass that was the winning touchdown of the game. I had to hold back the tears. I was so happy for him.
